Marin Clunes - A Lion Called Mugie Marin Clunes - A Lion Called Mugie

It is well into its third decade since lions roamed in the Kora National Reserve where legendary conservationist George Adamson set up a camp to rescue lions and release them back into the wild. The heart breaking but successful story of rescuing orphaned cub Elsa became internationally famous in the blockbuster film Born Free, based on the iconic book written by George s wife Joy. Tony Fitzjohn worked closely with George, and continues to work in wildlife conservation. He has lovingly rebuilt George s original camp, Kampi Ya Simba, in the Kora National Reserve, abandoned after he was murdered by Somali bandits in 1989. Tony picks up where he and George left off all those years ago, with the aim of releasing captive and orphaned lions back into the wild with the support of the Kenya Wildlife Service. Martin Clunes has had a close friendship with Tony since they met 20 years ago when they released Nina, a zoo elephant, back into the wild. In this documentary Martin travels to Kenya to visit Tony and to meet his first lion cub to be brought to the Kora camp for 25 years. Mugie, an orphaned lion cub was found when he was just three weeks old, washed up on a river bank after a flash flood. Martin and Tony travel 140 miles from Kora to Ol Jogi, a 60,000 acre private game sanctuary for some of East Africa s most endangered wildlife to collect Mugie. Thanks to an electric fence, the reserve is protected against poaching, allowing the wildlife to flourish. Jamie Gaymer, the reserve s wildlife and security manager, has been looking after the cub he named Mugie after the place he was found, and contacted Tony to ask if he could take him. Martin says: While there are about 500,000, elephants, left on the continent, there are only 30,000 lions. Three years ago a mission began to bring lions back to a remote Kenyan wilderness. From day one I have had the privilege of being a witness to this story. It s one that stirred deep childhood memories, brought great highs and awful lows. This is the true story of one animal s big adventure, and one man s dream.

Pilgrimage - With Simon Reeve Pilgrimage - With Simon Reeve

For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures on earth, involving epic journeys across the country and around the world. This series sees Simon Reeve retrace the exciting adventures of our ancestors. He meets inspirational modern travellers, sees extraordinary sights and learns about the forgotten aspects of pilgrimage, including the vice, thrills and dangers, that all awaited travellers. He explores the faith, the hopes, desires, and even the food that helped to keep medieval Britons and more recent travellers on the road. In this series Simon journeys first from northern England to Canterbury. Then across France and northern Spain, before he treks high into the mighty Alps on his way to Rome. Finally he heads east to glorious Istanbul, Turkey, then on to the Holy Land and his final destination, Jerusalem. In this series Simon will immerse himself in the pilgrimage experience of the past and the present: he will walk long hard miles, travel by sea, stay with monks and Bedouins, cross deserts and check points. He will encounter the kindness of strangers and the fellowship of walking the pilgrim routes. He will often forsake the modern comforts we have come to expect when travelling; he will sleep in dormitories with other pilgrims and eat their simple food. In re-living pilgrimage he will call upon numerous contemporaneous accounts of travellers, from across the centuries. Simon will explore how medieval Christianity changed from being at the centre of life, and death, to the Victorian periphery and find the impetus for our consumer driven society s return to pilgrimage. The age of Pilgrimage is back and Simon is about to go straight into its heart. All the way to Jerusalem...

Pompeii - Life & Death in a Roman Town Pompeii - Life & Death in a Roman Town

Pompeii: one of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history. We know how its victims died, but this film sets out to answer another question - how did they live? Gleaning evidence from an extraordinary find, Cambridge professor and Pompeii expert Mary Beard provides new insight into the lives of the people who lived in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius before its cataclysmic eruption. In a dark cellar in Oplontis, just three miles from the centre of Pompeii, 54 skeletons who didn't succumb to the torrent of volcanic ash are about to be put under the microscope. The remains will be submitted to a barrage of tests that will unlock one of the most comprehensive scientific snapshots of Pompeian life ever produced - and there are some big surprises in store. Using the latest forensic techniques it is now possible to determine what those who perished in the disaster ate and drank, where they came from, what diseases they suffered, how rich they were, and perhaps, even more astonishingly, the details of their sex lives. The way the remains were found in the cellar already provides an invaluable clue about the lives of the people they belonged to. On one side of the room were individuals buried with one of the most stunning hauls of gold, jewellery and coins ever found in Pompeii. On the other, were people buried with nothing. It looked the stark dividing line of a polarised ancient society: a room partitioned between super rich and abject poor. But on closer examination the skeletons reveal some surprises about life in Pompeii.

For the first time ever, CT scanning and X-Ray equipment bring new light to the secrets of the victims of the 79 AD eruption. Mary unpacks the human stories behind the tragic figures: gladiators, slaves, businesswomen and children. Mary goes behind the scenes of the 'Great Pompeii Project' where restoration teams have gradually removed the layers of time and deterioration from the frescoes and mosaics of houses closed to the public for decades. And with the help of point-cloud scanning technology, Pompeii is seen and explained like never before. Mary has unprecedented access to hidden storerooms and archaeological labs packed to the hilt with items from daily life: plumbing fittings, pottery, paint pots, foodstuff and fishing nets. As she pieces it all together, Mary presents a film that is a celebratory and unique view of life in this extraordinary town.

Van Gogh - Painted with Words Van Gogh - Painted with Words

The legacy of Vincent Van Gogh was not just a great number of masterpieces but also the most fascinating artist's correspondence that we know. In fact if we never retained a single painting of his, the letters alone would make him a singular figure in the art world. As the letters testify, he may have struggled to become an accomplished artist, but he was a born wordsmith. Vincent Van Gogh is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, (Star of the Imitation Game and TV lead roles in Sherlock and Parade s End) and Jamie Parker takes on the role of Vincent's brother, Theo. Vincent Van Gogh: Painted with Words will offer a unique portrait of the artist told from his own words. This first-hand account will show that Van Gogh was far from the mad freak as he is so often depicted, but a sophisticated, civilised man right up until his death. Vincent Van Gogh: Painted with Words is beautifully crafted piece. Every word spoken by the actors in this film is sourced from the letters that Van Gogh sent to his younger brother Theo, and of those around him. What emerges is a complex portrait of a sophisticated, civilised and yet tormented man. This is Van Gogh's story in his own words. Narrated by Alan Yentob.

Very British Problems Very British Problems

Channel 4's Very British Problems sees some of Britain's most famous faces share their struggles against the endless capacity of social awkwardness which comes with being British. Originating from a Twitter feed, which amassed 1.1 million followers, Very British Problems features hilarious & engagingly wry observations about life as an uptight, tea-guzzling, weather-obsessed, queue-loving Brit from some of the U.K's most famous names. Why can Brits be furious enough to tut, but shudder at the thought of complaining? Why do they spend so much of their lives apologising to inanimate objects? We discover that the British are almost totally incapable of expressing their emotions - Brits would rather throw their food away in a restaurant toilet than complain to the waiter, feel compelled to tell a hairdresser that they love a terrible haircut and have no idea how to receive a compliment. The hidden rage felt when bad queuing is observed and we find out why every Brit says sorry at least eight times a day and how confused and angry we get about tipping. How many times is it acceptable to ask someone to repeat themselves before you just have to nod, chuckle and hope for the best? For the British, being in public comes with an obligation to be polite, but being polite in the UK is very complicated. Narrated by the quick witted Dame Julie Walters, the likes of James Cordon, Jonathan Ross, Freddie Flintoff, Nigel Havers, Vic Reeves, Ruth Jones and Stephen Mangan share with us their hilarious, personal experiences and opinions as to why our nation has a peculiar ability to find confusion, embarrassment and social awkwardness at every turn. Often hilarious, always interesting and at times even thought provoking, this entertaining series is great viewing.
